Our Beginnings and Now

Melbourne, Australia in September 2008, at the 2nd Australasia eResearch Conference, the founder of a small start-up company called Research IT Online Pty. Ltd. was presenting his company overview and its vision and mission to enable best practices in data management for scientific research through the agile adoption of fast evolving technologies. From this presentation he came to understand that what he was talking about was in fact “data science”. What he didn’t know at the time is that he would go on to become one of the most famous pioneering data scientist of all time.

That person is Troy Sadkowsky, the founder of Data Scientists Pty. Ltd. and the creator of Data Scientists Dot Com and Data Scientists Dot Net, and the owner of the largest Data Scientists community group on LinkedIn.

It was back in Melbourne on this day in 2008 that Troy was discussing his passion for supporting researchers by ensuring that they had quality data management plans, that incorporated secure and scalable data storage. Data management plans that supported research method that made use of the latest in mathematical modelling such as Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Data management plans that included access to available super and high performance computing power. Data management plans that involved the utilization of existing open source solution or if appropriate the development of a bespoke open source software solution to support the research goals. Troy also talked about it wasn’t just about having quality data management plans, but it was equally important to have a person responsible for the execution of the plan, a facilitator in the adoption of new procedures and tools.

It was after Troy had explained all this when one of the attendees of the conference (Sayeed Choudhury, Director of Digital Research and Curation Center, John Hopkins University) came forth and said – “you know there is a new name that we are using over in the states that describes people like you, we call them data scientists”.

After having the name being bestowed upon him, with new drive and focus around his passion, Troy re-branded his company to be Data Scientists Pty. Ltd. in the same year of 2008 and created supporting websites, Data Scientists Dot Com and Data Scientists Dot Net. Data Scientists Dot Com served as the corporate and commercial brand for serving his vision and mission of enabling best practices in data management for scientific research. Data Scientists Dot Net served as the community and collaboration site for Data Scientists to share experiences and knowledge.

For over 10 years, Data Scientists Pty. Ltd. has been serving the research community and has delivered data science services to research institutions all around the globe. Data Scientists has had the privilege to serve research organisations such as the National Cancer Institute in North America, Queens University in Europe, University of Malaya in Asia and over 10 research institutes in Australia.

In 2020, Data Scientists Pty. Ltd. is expanding and offering its highly experienced and leading data science services to industry R&D.
